Aviation contributes roughly 2.5% of global carbon emissions. Given that battery-electric planes remain limited to short commutes, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) represents the primary pathway to scale net-zero carbon flight.
HEFA-SPK: The Dominant SAF Pathway
Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (HEFA-SPK) is currently the only commercially scaled SAF pathway. By refining lipids through catalytic hydrogenation, we produce kerosene that can be blended up to 50% with conventional Jet A-1.
Regulatory Mandates & Scaling Demands
The ReFuelEU Aviation initiative mandates that fuel suppliers ensure EU airports distribute at least 2% SAF by 2025, rising to 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Meeting these quotas requires massive refinery capacity expansions.
“SAF is the only technical option available today to decarbonize long-haul flights. The race is on to secure the necessary waste lipid allocations.”
